Candidate Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, daughter of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, may win a seat in parliament in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

The 47-year-old, known locally as “Miss Elegance,” is the candidate of her mother’s political party, the National Liberal Party (NLP).

“If you don’t know her, she has the kind of demeanor that evokes respect in any meeting, anywhere. Nobody turns away from her presence,” Joey Arroyo, former Davao mayor and chief executive of her political party, told CNN Philippines.

“Her vast and excellent knowledge of both foreign and domestic affairs on issues facing our country have the ear of many. Her conviction in her plans as well as her ability to convey them resonates with the Filipino people.”

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was raised by her mother in Malacañang Palace, now the Philippine president’s residence. The two were once close, but parted ways when, in the mid-1990s, Arroyo staged a coup against her mother, sparking a violent campaign in the country.

According to several media reports, Arroyo locked herself in the palace, planted a bomb and lived there for several days to avoid arrest.

Duterte has already appointed his wife and son to top executive positions in his cabinet. The son, Paolo, was elected mayor of Davao as a young man and built up a considerable army of loyal followers.

If Arroyo’s mother were to pass away before the presidential election, her daughter would take her place.

CNN Philippines reached out to Arroyo for comment, but it was not immediately clear if she could make any comment. She is expected to be sworn in as a senator in October.

Her mother, Gloria, was President of the Philippines from 2003-2011, and campaigned for her son, the country’s current president, in 2016.

Duterte’s wife, Sara, told CNN Philippines that she’s “an independent woman” and plans to work full-time for the national campaign.

Duterte was elected by a huge margin in 2016 — partly on the popularity of his views on how his handling of crime and other law and order issues has helped improved the country’s image.

He has been accused of overseeing a bloody war on drugs that has led to some 2,500 deaths.

Arroyo took over her mother’s political party after she fled the Philippines amid the 1999 coup attempt, citing death threats she received.
